Songhuajiang Gr

Songhuajiang Gr

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2sG (19)

Province:
Jilin, Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Songliao Basin. T. Utino and F. Sakai erected the Songhuajiang series in 1937. The locality for the designation is to the south of the second bridge of the Songhua River of the Dehui County of Jilin.

The Songhuajiang series erected represents the set of red mudstone with gray black siderite banded mudstone in the upper part on the southern side of the second Songhuajiang bridge (equivalent to the present Qingshankou Fm - the lower part of the Nenjiang Fm). In 1942 Kobayashi and Suzuki extended the implication of the series to include the Quantou Fm, the Nenjiang Fm and the Fulongquan bed, being of Late Cretaceous age. In 1957 the Xian Department of Geological Survey under the Ministry of Petroleum Industry called the Quantou Fm and the strata equivalent to the Mingshui Fm the Songhuajiang series. In 1958 the second Petroleum Prospecting Brigade under the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources moved the upper limit of the series down to the top of the Sifangtai Fm. In the Songliao region, the Quantou Gr (Early Cretaceous) was divided into the Denglouku Fm, the Jijialing Fm (the Quantou Fm), the Qingshan Fm (Qingshankou Fm) and the Yaojia Fm; and the Songhuajiang Group into the Sifangtai Fm and the Mingshui Fm during the national stratigraphic conference held in 1959. In the same year, the second Petroleum Prospecting Brigade under the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources defined the Songhuajiang Group to the Denglouku Fm and the Nenjiang Fm. In 1982, Hao Yichun et al collectively called the Quantou Fm - the Mingshui Fm as the Songhuajiang Group.

The Songhuajiang Group was extended in implication to include the seven rock formations from the Denglouku Fm to the Mingshui Fm in the report on the study of the stratigraphic multiple subdivision and correlation of Heilongjiang in 1994.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation of gray white conglomerate lies unconformably on the light gray tuff of the Jurassic strata. However, in Songliao Basin column, it overlies volcanics of the Yingcheng Fm.

Upper contact

Its top unconformably underlies the Paleogene Yian Fm.

Regional extent

Songliao Basin.
